Going southeast out of the cities is a popular gravel destination because of the rolling farm land and eventual bluff cut climbs that the Cannon River and Mississippi River provide. This route starts you just on the edge of the suburbs in the town of Coates. From here you’ll roll along in wide open farmland until you reach the descent to get into the Cannon River Valley. Here you’ll meet two steep gravel climbs that we’ve used for years to test our early season fitness. You’ll then roll back to Coates passing through Vermillion (The STEIN HAUS usually has a fish fry if you are bonking). If you have time, add 10 miles and bike through UMore Park, it’s an old munitions plant with left over concrete structures reminding us of its history.
